Description
In Italian tradition, La Befana is the kindly witch who leaves gifts and candies to good children on the Eve of Epiphany. Legend goes that she was a very busy Nonna (grandma), always cooking and cleaning, like all Nonnas. One day, three wise kings stopped at her home, explaining that they were going to visit the Christ child and bring him gifts. She gave the three kings food and shelter so they could rest, and in return they invited her along upon heading back to their journey. She said she couldn't go because she had too much cleaning to do, so they left. After baking, she was sweeping the floor and lost in thought, she realized the opportunity they had given her, so she grabbed the sweets she had baked, still holding the broom, and ran out to catch up to the kings. She ran and ran so fast that the broom caught the wind and started flying, and she dropped sweets during her flight, hoping they would reach the baby Jesus. Every year, she takes flight again, leaving gifts in the shoes of good children.
